Acer Aiming to take No.1 Spot in the Notebook PC Category

The War of the PC Powerhouses goes on. In 2006 Dell gave up its Number 1 spot to Hewlett Packard and in Q3’09 the Number 2 spot to Acer. Acer benefited from strong shipments during the back-to-school season, as prices for laptops fell and netbook shipments gained momentum, said Jay Chou, research manager at IDC.

Acer’s strong foothold in low-cost netbook mobile PCs fed the sharply increasing consumer preference for an affordable machine. This is the area where Dell is comparatively not very strong.

Founder and CEO Michael Dell insists he is more concerned with profits. "If we wanted [market share], we'd go and sell a whole bunch of netbooks," Netbooks carry lower profit margins than full-fledged PCs.
Last year, upon purchasing Gateway, Acer stated that their goal for 2009 was to take over Dell’s #2 spot. Staying true to their word they very much did so with a surge in computer sales of +23% from their sales figures in 2008. This is a big accomplishment considering Acer being an Asian company is giving a tough time to companies such as Dell and HP.
But Acer does not plan to stop here, the company has recently expressed its intentions to become the number one PC vendor. According to a recent news article on English-language Techradar, Lanci claims that Acer “will be number one within a year,” a statement made during a product presentation in Amsterdam.
This statement is definitely bold considering that the rescent figures presented by Gartner indicated that HP had acquired 18.5 percent of the total worldwide market share. However, only time will tell if Acer will actually deliver a hard enough blow to topple HP or not!
